Foundation volunteers outside the Flying Cloud Cafe in 2004

When Chrissy passed away in May, 2000 she left a gaping hole in many hearts. Her husband Joe spoke with 'The Girls' - Chrissy's high school girlfriends - about creating a foundation that would eventually be turned over to his daughters when they were old enough to manage it. Over the next year we met many times to console each other, spend time with Chrissy's daughters, and talk about plans for a foundation.

When Chrissy was in her short remission, she talked about volunteering and helping others. She was never able to fulfill this dream but we knew together we could in her name. Collectively, we decided to focus on assisting local women battling cancer. Joe knew firsthand what it was like to face a stack of medical bills, lose the income of your partner, and worry about paying everyday bills while still remaining focused on beating cancer. Therefore, we decided to help area women pay their everyday bills such as rent or mortgage payments, utility bills and COBRA payments as well as prescription drugs that are not covered by insurance.

In order to help these women we needed money. We decided that a "beef-and-beer" type of event held in Atlantic City, Chrissy’s hometown, would work best for us. We named the event "Angel Night" and held our first gathering a few days after September 11, 2001. The inaugural Angel Night was a huge success, raising $28,000 and allowed us to fulfill our desire to help women in remembrance of our dear friend.

We are now going into our seventeenth year of raising funds and providing financial assistance to Atlantic and Cape May County women. With the help of Chrissy’s family and friends we have been successfully holding Angel Nights annually. We sell a unique annual Angel Pin and hold silent and chance auctions during the event. Angel Night is our sole fundraiser and source of income other than private contributions made throughout the year. Due to the generosity and support of everyone that participates, we have been able to help area women by paying more than $400,000 in bills for them. In 2008, we began a partnership with South Jersey Cancer Fund to perform the patient liaison duties for our organization. This successful relationship continues today.

'The Girls' are Beth Sarkos, Janine Sooy-Sheridan, Leslie Patrizio, Lori Ranck, Jennifer McGrath and Missy Passmore. Beth Sarkos had volunteered to be the patient liaison and had been doing so since we began until we handed over that responsibility to the South Jersey Cancer Fund following our 2007 fundraiser.

Beginning in 2012, Chrissy's daughters along with Joe have taken over most of the responsibilities. They are doing a great job and are guaranteeing that the Foundation will continue for years to come. Together with the help of our families, friends, and you, we are keeping Chrissy’s memory alive by financially assisting women in Atlantic and Cape May Counties who are battling cancer. Thank you.
